What is Facial artery clinical anatomy at lower face?
At the lower face, facial artery located deeper than the platysma and the depressor anguli oris muscle. As the artery traverses further upward, it runs between the risorius and the zygomaticus major muscle immediately in front of the buccal fat pad. At this region, facial artery is not covered by any muscles. In this location, the facial artery shows the appearance of a coiled snake or pig’s tail; furthermore, the artery receives no protection from the muscle layer below the superficial fat layer. It is usually located lateral to the mouth corner. Filler injections in this area can lead to rupturing of the facial artery followed by severe hematoma, bruising, and extensive edema. Hematoma should be taken into consideration if sudden external swelling on the cheek occurs or if patients express of the formation of acorn or chestnut during filler injection procedure.
