Recommendations for reopening the aesthetic clinics

CBAM Recommendations for the process of opening the aesthetic clinics:

To all CBAM members,

We are aware that in response to COVID-19 most of our members closed their aesthetic clinics voluntarily even before the orders from the government. We also know that elimination of the COVID-19 is not expected in the short future and phases for reopening of the businesses have already started in most provinces.

As the safety and health of our members and their patients are always our top priority, we, in the CBAM ( Canadian Board of aesthetic medicine), are trying to communicate with regulatory bodies to get more instructions about the reopening phases for the aesthetic clinics in Canada. We will update you as soon as we get more  answers or instructions.

Our team of faculty has come up with a list of suggestions that can minimize the rate of transmission of the COVID-19 to be considered as soon as the clinics are able to open.

Note: These are recommendations from CBAM  and are not considered as the standards of practice. This list is the subject to change. We will look closely for any updates or changes. Please check with your regulatory bodies as well for any guidelines or instructions. 

List of Recommendations:

  1. Screening:

Screen all patients before booking appointments (or within 48 hours before the appointment). Reschedule the appointment if any of these criteria exist:

  • Fever
  • Body ache
  • Cough or any URTI
  • Recent travelling
  • Close contacts with any COVID positive patient
  • Diarrhea and/or GI infection symptoms
  • All patients with immune deficiency
  1. All bookings will be staggered with enough intervals between patients. No two patients will arrive at the same time in the waiting area or in the clinic.
  1. Patients should call the receptionist as soon as they arrive in the parking area and wait in the car until the treatment area is available and the previous client has departed the waiting area.
  1. All patients should wear a mask and gloves before entering the clinic. Masks or gloves should only be removed if the treatment area is covered by the mask or glove only during the treatment procedure.
  1. Advertising signs to be available to promote social distancing and frequently sanitizing the hands.
  1. Cleaning and sanitizing all surfaces to be performed in the treatment room after each client departs.
  1. No friends or family members of clients are allowed in the waiting or treatment area. If they accompany the client, they should remain in the parking area until the client returns.
  1. All staff should wear surgical masks and gloves in the clinic all the time and sanitize the hands when entering or exiting the treatment room. The treatment provider should change the gloves for every individual patient.
  1. The number of staff is minimized in the administrative/waiting area and they are scheduled in multiple day shifts.
  1. Treatment providers should wear goggles and masks (surgical or N95). Any procedures on the face are considered high risk and N95 masks are recommended.
  1. In order to minimize the contact time, the client consultation should be ideally performed online and the physical appointments to be scheduled solely for the treatment procedures or if consultation needs a direct examination.
  1. Large gatherings such as Open Houses and Grand openings should be avoided.
  1. All skin products should preferably be mailed to the clients or as a curbside service rather than physically being given to them at the office.
  1. All staff should wear scrubs and change all clothes when arriving home. At home, they should put all the scrubs in a bag and leave it for 72 hours or wash it with warm water.
  1. Safeguard shields such as Plexiglass should be installed for the reception area. If a safeguard shield is not available, the social distancing between the reception and the patient should be provided (consider marking on the floor).
  1. Take home forms such as aftercare instructions should be available in digital format so that the patients do not take any physical items home.
  1. All the products such as neuromodulators should be prepared in a different room.
  1. The procedures which require removing the face mask such as lip/nasolabial fillers should be minimized.
  2. All treatment procedures should ideally be performed in the same treatment room for every individual patient.
  3. All the unnecessary tools, devices or decorations which are too difficult to get sanitized such as wall photos or display stands should be removed from the clinic.
  4. All Patients should receive the instructions through email before the appointment.
  5. A separate consent form should be available to sign by clients which indicates about the risk of COVID-19 contamination when they select to attend the aesthetic clinic.
