Who Can Administer Aesthetic Injectables in Canada?
In Canada, Botox and filler injections are administered by the respective provincial or territorial colleges. Specific regulations may vary slightly from province to province, but in general, only licensed health care professionals (including physicians and surgeons, nurses, dentists, and other health professionals) with appropriate training and certification are allowed to perform cosmetic injectables procedures. These regulatory colleges supervision the training, certification, and practice standards for professionals involved in aesthetic medicine. So having an educational background in the medical field is an important prerequisite before signing up and starting the courses and trainings related to cosmetic injectables.

Can Botox and Filler be done by nurses in Canada?
As we said before, regulations about aesthetic medicine injectables like Botox and Fillers vary in different areas of the Canada and are administered by the respective provincial or territorial colleges. For example, the policy of College of Nurses of Ontario about the cosmetic injections is:
“To administer Botox or PRP, an RN or RPN must perform the controlled act of administering a substance by injection. Therefore, RNs and RPNs who administer cosmetic injectables need to work in collaboration with a prescriber, such as a doctor or NP, and obtain the proper authorization, such as a direct order or directive. having the authority to perform a procedure does not necessarily mean it is appropriate to do so”
Who can provide Botox and Dermal Filler treatment in Canada?
The following medical professionals can perform Botox and filler injections in Canada:
Licensed Physicians (MDs or DOs): Due to the knowledge they have in anatomy, physiology and pharmacology, Physicians are a suitable option to work in the field of cosmetic injections. Their skill of facial anatomy and causes of aging of different parts of the face helps them to have a suitable treatment plan for each patient and treat the patient’s concerns efficiently with safe injections.
Registered Nurses (RNs) and Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs): Another group that are very active in the field of Botox and filler injections are RNs and RPNs. They often work under the supervision of a physician or a nurse practitioner. RNs and RPNs have a strong foundation in nursing care and patient assessment, which makes them well-suited to provide Botox and filler treatments. They can also provide ongoing patient education and support after treatment.
Nurse Practitioners (NPs): NPs have advanced nursing training and are also qualified to perform a wide range of aesthetic procedures, including Botox and fillers. NPs are one of the groups that have a lot of desire to start performing Botox and filler injections.
Dentists: Dentists have specialized knowledge of facial anatomy and are well-versed in injectable techniques. They are primarily authorized to administer Botox and fillers in the perioral (around the mouth) region. Dentists can also provide treatment for TMJ disorders and other facial pain conditions. But their activity does not end here, and according to their skills and experience, they can perform all treatments related to Botox and fillers.
In addition to the above, there are a few of other medical professionals who may be qualified to provide Botox and dermal filler treatments in Canada, such as dermatologists, plastic surgeons, and pharmacists. However, it is important to ensure that the training you choose is properly prepared and certified in order to maximize your potential and knowledge before starting your aesthetic practice.
Remember, not every physician or nurse, even with high relevant skills, can start injecting Botox and fillers. All specialists must have passed quality training courses before starting their activities, and after all the necessary preparations, they can start working.

Hi I’m doing my LPN course so I can administer botox and fillers under the watch of a doctor. However, is it necessary to be a nurse or a medical professional? Are you not able to still administer them without being a nurse? Are there any other options? Thanks
Hi Simran,
Thank you for your inquiry. The regulations of Canada only allow nurses and physicians to perform aesthetic injections that go under the dermis layer of the skin (invasive procedures) and of course this entails filler and Botox injections too. Hello, will Canada accept someone to administer botox and fillers if the nursing degree is an associates degree and or from a different country where they obtained their license?
Hi Allysa, In order to be able to perform Botox and filler injections in Canada, you need to be either a Canadian registered nurse (RN, LPN, RPN, and NP), or a Canadian licensed physician. Otherwise, it is against the law. I hope this answers your question.
How about pharmacists in Ontario ? They have a injection license!
Thank you for your question. We have had pharmacists from Ontario attend our injectables courses, including training in neurotoxin, filler, and PRP. Training is conducted under the supervision of licensed instructors.
However, we strongly recommend that you consult with your regulatory college to confirm which treatments fall within your scope of practice before enrolling in any course.

Hi Nancy, thank you for your comment. It depends on the province in which your license is issued. For example, province of Alberta, as of now, March 2024, includes some certain injections under the scope of practice of pharmacists. However, the best approach is to ask your college of licensing body to make sure whether aesthetic procedures are included under your scope of practice.

Hi Mariam, thank you for your comment. As far as we are aware, the regulations in Ontario allow IMGs to perform some injections under the supervision of a fully licensed Physician in Ontario. However, we advise you that before investing in any Aesthetic Medicine course, you do your own research about this matter as the regulations can change any moment.

For an expert and experienced nurse injector it is always easy to find a medical director as long as the medical director can assure that accepting to work with that nurse injector would not jeopardize their license or registration. We also have a medical director referral program, in which we refer the graduates of our CAMP Certified program (who are people that have attended multiple sessions with us and have done injections under the supervision of our expert instructors) to a list of medical directors who are open to work.

Hi Evelyn, in order to do invasive aesthetic medicine procedures, such as filler and neurotoxin treatments, you need to be able to inject substances under the dermis layer of the skin; and LPNs are allowed to do so under supervision of a medical director.

Can I get certified in the united states and use that certification in British Columbia?

In order to perform aesthetic procedures in Canada, you need to have a license or registration whose scope of practice allows you to do that certain procedure, as well as a certificate that verifies you are trained to do that procedure which has to be valid in Canada. As we cannot guarantee that all the aesthetic medicine certificate courses offered in the US are valid in Canada as well, we suggest that you take these courses in from accredited institutions Canada such as the Canadian Board of Aesthetic Medicine.
Hi as a certified Paramedic in Ontario could I administer Botox and Filler?

To the best of our knowledge, injecting substances under the dermis layer of the skin does not fall under the scope of practice of Paramedics, however, if you want to know for sure, the best approach would be to ask your college of licensing body and see whether or not you are able to perform these procedures.
Who can provide botox with no supervision? Can an lpn run thier own practice or do they need to be a nurse practitioner?
Hi Kiersten, thank you for your comment. Only licensed physicians, and in most provinces Nurse Practitioners, are allowed to perform these injections without any supervision. Unfortunately, LPNs, RPNs, and RNs need to practice the invasive procedures under the supervision of a medical director, who can be either a physician or a nurse practitioner.

Canadian regulations, unfortunately, do not allow international dentists to perform invasive aesthetic medicine procedures in Canada, and as a result, even practicing in a hands-on practice session would not be possible for them. However, if you are interested to attend the Botox and filler courses that we offer, we are able to sign you up as an observer in the sessions and at the end, you will receive a certificate of completion as an observer. This option is usually given to those who want to learn the techniques, and would like to return to the country in which they have a license and practice there. Please note that as an observer, you will not be able to practice on the live models that we have in our courses. I hope this answers your question.
Hello, does RN in Alberta need to be in the same building/facility with the medical director while performing Botox & Filler injections? Also, does the medical director need have certain aesthetic license to be a medical director?
In Alberta, an RN must have a client-specific order and perform Botox or filler injections while the medical director is on-site and immediately available. The medical director must be a licensed prescriber (such as a physician or nurse practitioner) but does not need a special aesthetic license.

However, you cannot practice aesthetic medicine in Canada with our certificate alone. You would need a valid medical license issued by the Medical Council of Canada or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. IMGs must work under the supervision of a licensed physician unless they hold full Canadian licensure. In British Columbia (BC):
Naturopathic doctors are allowed to administer Botox and dermal fillers only if they have completed additional certified training and are licensed by the College of Naturopathic Physicians of BC (CNPBC). They must also be authorized under the Prescriptive Authority Certification and follow the specific scope outlined by the CNPBC.
International Medical Graduates (IMGs) in Ontario:
IMGs can register for Botox and filler training courses in Ontario for educational purposes. However, completing the course does not grant the legal right to perform the injections independently unless the IMG is also licensed to practice medicine in Ontario.
Performing Injections Under Supervision (Ontario or BC):
An IMG may assist or perform injections under the direct supervision of a licensed physician, provided that the supervising doctor assumes full responsibility for the treatment. This must comply with the standards and policies of the respective provincial regulatory bodies.
